Pace Calculator
Find your walking or running pace by entering your information into the calculator.
How to use the pace calculator
Your pace is a measure of speed rather than the time it takes to run a certain distance. To calculate the pace you need to know time and distance. So, finding the pace you need to maintain in order to achieve a certain race time is easy if you have those two data points.
How to calculate pace
To calculate pace, convert your running time into seconds by multiplying by 60. Next, divide that number by the total distance traveled. This is pace in seconds. Lastly, take the pace in seconds and convert it to hours/minutes/seconds. To find minutes, divide the number of seconds by 60. Here’s an example to illustrate.
Pace for a 3-mile run that took 48 minutes to finish.
Start by converting time to seconds. 48 minutes x 60 = 2,880
Divide time in seconds by the distance. 2,880 / 3miles = 960 seconds
Now, convert the pace from seconds into minutes. 960 seconds / 60 seconds in a minute = 16 minute/mile
Pace calculator for different race distances
Using the calculation above it’s easy to find out how long it will take you to run a marathon, half marathon, or 5k.
Marathon pace
As an example take the calculation above. Take the minutes per mile and multiply by the race distance. Then covert that number to hours, minutes, and seconds.
16 minute/mile x 26.2 miles = 419.2
419.2 minutes / 60 = 6 hours 59 minutes 12 seconds
Half marathon pace
As an example take the calculation above. Take the minutes per mile and multiply by the half marathon race distance. Then covert that number to hours, minutes, and seconds.
16 minute/mile x 13.1 miles = 209.6
209.6 minutes / 60 = 3 hours 29 minutes 36 seconds
How to calculate distance based on pace
It’s easy to find the distance you’ve run if you know your pace and time. To calculate the distance, simply divide the pace in seconds by the total time in seconds. The result is the distance traveled.
Here’s an example to illustrate. Figure out how far you can run in 30 minutes at a 16:30 pace.
First, start by converting time to seconds. 16.5 x 60 = 990 pace in seconds
Next, calculate the total time from minutes to seconds. 30 x 60 = 1,800 seconds
Lastly, divide total time in seconds by the pace in seconds. 1,800 seconds / 990 = 1.82 miles
