What does the Body Shape Calculator do?

This calculator helps females classify the shape of their bodies.

There is some research that links certain body shapes to certain health risks. This data isn’t an indictment on your health. The waist-hip ratio is a better indicator of health.

How to measure body shape properly

When measuring, stand straight with arms to the side. Make sure the measuring tape is tight against the body, but not too tight such that it compresses the body. This can give an inaccurate measurement.

Bust—the circumference measurement around the chest over the fullest part of the breasts/chest, while wearing a properly fitted bra.

Waist—the smallest circumference measured around your waist, just above your belly button.

High hip—the circumference of the upper swell of the hip over the pelvic region. It is around 7 inches (18 cm) below the natural waist.

Hip—the largest circumference measured around the hips over the largest part of the buttocks.

Different Body Shapes

Body shapes are categorized into 5 main types and named after the shape that most resembles the body build.

Hourglass Body Shape

An hourglass body shape has a waist circumference that is at least 25% smaller than shoulder or bust measurements. And their waist is at least 25% smaller than their hips, and the shoulder and hip measurements are within 5% of each other.

This resembles the image of an hourglass, where weight isn’t concentrated in just one area of the body. Many younger women have an hourglass-shaped body type.

Since hourglass shapes accumulate less abdominal fat, they are also less likely to suffer from conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Apple or Round Body Shape

Apple shape body types have a waist measurement that is greater than their hip and bust measurements. This means that they have higher levels of abdominal visceral fat. Many people with this body shape have a greater risk of developing diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Inverted Triangle Body Shape

People with inverted triangular body shapes have a shoulder or bust measurement that is more than 5% bigger than their hip measurement. They generally have broader shoulders and a narrower waist and tend to have a higher metabolism.

But if ITBS people eat a fatty diet, they are more at risk for heart disease. And body shapes in this category are also at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis.

Pear or Triangle Body Shape

Triangle or pear-shaped bodies carry more weight in the booty and hips compared to their tummies. Their shoulder or bust measurement is more than 5% smaller than hip measurement.

Women typically have a higher body fat percentage than men. However, women tend to have more of a pear-shaped body fat distribution, while men typically have an apple-shaped body fat distribution.

Rectangle Body Shape

The rectangle body shape is also referred to as a straight or ruler body shape. Men and women with a rectangular body type have a waist circumference that is less than 25% smaller than shoulder or bust, while the shoulder, bust, and hip measurements are within 5% of each other.

These shaped people have a narrower frame, flatter in the chest and butt. Individuals with a rectangular body shape tend to carry weight more proportionately throughout the body but are also prone to carry weight around the midsection.

Many dancers and even long-distance runners have this shape. They generally look skinny, but it can be more difficult for them to build lean muscle mass with a slower metabolism.
